WASTE REDUCTION AT WORK

Each employee generates about a ton of garbage annually — equivalent to over 100 household garbage cans!

Efficient waste management not only reduces costs but also enhances customer recognition and employee morale. The real bottom line is that committing to reducing your waste decreases the amount of waste going to our landfills.

Putting paper into a recycling bin

Basic Steps for a Waste Reduction Program:

  • Identify the most common items in your garbage.

  • Set Up a Sorting System: Use bins for Paper, Cardboard, Compost, Refundable Containers, and Garbage.

  • Call your hauler to arrange collection see Collection Providers below

  • Select containers to collect material. Clearly label bins. Download sort guides

  • Create Centralized Sorting AreasMake recycling as easy as throwing away garbage.

  • Provide paper recycling bins at workstations; consider removing desk garbage cans.

  • Place paper recycling bins near printers, fax machines, & photocopiers.

  • Install Compost Containers in food areas, including washrooms if paper towels are used.

  • Keep staff informed about recycling efforts and waste diversion progress through memos, emails, and bulletin board reminders.

  • Negotiate Collection ContractsReduce garbage container size or collection frequency to save money.
