Landfill Hours
Regular hours:
Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Saturday | 8:00 am to 12 noon
The Landfill is closed on Sundays, as per usual
Open all holidays, except Christmas & New Year's Day
Please note: As of January 1 2024, the tip fee for garbage will increase to $135 /tonne. The minimum charge for small loads will be $15 and the fee for bulky items, stove, washer and dryers will be $15 each.
Small loads:
Garbage $1.50 /bag up to 10 bags (Jan 1, 2024)
Compost: Free / 1st cart or 2 brown paper leaf bags. 1 cart up to 100 kg: $1
Recycling: Free
All Vehicles Must Report to the Scalehouse.
Secure your Load - all waste transported to Crane Mountain Landfill must be securely fastened so as to prevent any material escaping while in transport. Failure to do so will result in a $20 fee.

Small Load Fees
Garbage, up to 10 bags: $1.50 per bag (Jan 1, 2024)
Compostable Material, up to 1 cart (2 brown paper bags): Free
More than 1 cart up to 100 kg: $1
Greater than 100 kg: $50 / tonne
All Appliances Containing Freon: $20 each
Fridges, freezers, dehumidifiers and water coolers.
Tires for residential cars / trucks: $5 each
Tires for large commercial vehicles: $10 each
Returning tires to your tire dealer for recycling is free.
Washer, Dryer, or Stove: $15 ea (as of Jan 1 2024)
Electronics can be brought to a local recycling depot for free. More information
All Bulky Items will be weighed
Bulky items include: mattresses and furniture (Minimum charge is $15) as of Jan 1, 2024
Large Load Fees

Unsorted Waste (Garbage containing Yard Waste): $270 per tonne (Jan 1, 2024)
Yard Waste includes: Leaves, grass, weeds & twigs/brush
Unsorted Waste is defined as solid waste that includes yard waste.
Recyclable and compostable material should not be included in household waste. Residents may refer to the Recycling and Compost sections to learn what can be diverted from the landfill. Institutional, commercial, and industrial enterprises may refer to the Business section to learn what can be diverted from the landfill.
Compostable Material: $50 per tonne

Construction and Demolition Waste: $35 / tonne (Jan 1, 2024)
$6 minimum charge, up to 180 kg (Jan 1, 2024)

International Waste: $200 excavation fee, plus $250 per tonne (Jan 1, 2024)
Tires: $150 per tonne
Returning tires to your tire dealer is free. Certain restrictions apply. Ask your retailer for details or refer to the www.recyclenb.com.
Asbestos Waste: $125 per cubic meter as of Jan 1 2024
$600 minimum charge
Asbestos waste is defined as a friable waste containing asbestos fibre or asbestos dust in a concentration greater than one per cent by weight. The material may be disposed of at the site providing several conditions are met. Please call the Hotline at 738-1212 to ensure that you fully understand the procedure and to ensure that all the proper equipment and safety measures are in place for your arrival.
Box Scrape: $35 per unit scrape (Jan 1, 2024)

Do Your Part! If you hire someone to haul your waste, be sure you know where it is going. Request a receipt from the landfill or recycling business to verify that it has been recycled or legally landfilled.
Unacceptable Waste in Garbage:
- Automotive batteries
- Rechargeable batteries
- Herbicides and pesticides
- Liquid paints, solvents and dry cleaning fluids
- Sludge, waste oil, or oily wastes
- Untreated biomedical or infectious waste
- Liquid waste over 20 litres - Please inquire first, (some types are not allowed)
- Dangerous goods or materials (being any waste identified under the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act)
- Chemical or petrochemical waste
- Large dead animals
- Explosive materials
- Radioactive materials
- Seafood and animal processing waste

Directions to Crane Mountain Landfill
Crane Mountain Landfill is located at 10 Crane Mountain Road, on the City of Saint John’s northern boundary near the Town of Grand Bay-Westfield.
From Saint John: take Highway 7 North toward Grand Bay-Westfield. Take the first exit after Exit 90 (Grand Bay-Westfield). Our separate exit is marked “Regional Sanitary Landfill.” Then follow the signs.
From Fredericton: on Highway 7 South, take exit 90 for Grand Bay-Westfield. Take your next left, and you will see the landfill sign. Follow the signs.
