ReUse CONNECTIONS EVENT WRAP-UP
On Saturday, October 26, the FRSC hosted the ReUse Connections Event at Saint John Exhibition Park. A “one-stop” drop-off for ease of use for residents where local charities receive the material and less waste goes to landfill.
During the event 148 vehicles brought gently used items, including furniture, small household goods, and clothing., filling five 26-foot truckloads. The material was donated to ten local charities, and 450 kg of used electronics were sent for recycling.
The charities benefiting from our event (last year and this year) are: Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Salvation Army Thrift Store, First Steps Saint John, BGC, Bobby’s Hospice Shoppe, Diabetes Canada, Helping Hands – Hampton United Church, YMCA Newcomers Furniture Bank, Caring Closet, and Street Team SJ.
The amount collected at the event is significant; however, the ripple effects are far greater: Advertising and the event itself remind residents to donate gently used items before tossing them, all year long, reducing waste to the landfill. Thank you to the New Brunswick Environmental Trust Fund.
